What is the purpose of education? What is the purpose of learning in one’s life?

This question has troubled me from the word go while trying to understand why do we have to spend a good part of our life in the closed environment of our educational institutions.

Through my explorations and observations, I have come to believe that education as we know of it today has a threefold purpose which has evolved according to our the changing times and needs.

1) Education of an individual (Psychological needs) To satisfy curiosity, provide knowledge and develop critical thinking abilities.

Many of us at one time or another would be completely irritated by an innocent five year old, asking 'silly' why this, why that questions. All of us have a deep curiosity to learn about our surroundings and understand the law of cause and effect. The ability to question does not come so easily until we learn to ask right questions and to know where to look for their answers. Once we are able to make some sense of the information that we get and convert it to our knowledge we feel empowered, confident and ready to change the world! Education serves exactly that purpose of satisfying the undying hunger to learn, understand and apply.

There is a school of thought which claims that school kills creativity. There might be some truth in the statement but in any way that supports the argument that serving ones creativity is one purpose of education.

2)  Preparation of an individual for the society (Sociological needs) To develop one’s character and prepare an individual to be fit for the society.

Humans have evolved from animals living in small groups. We have changed drastically in a few thousand years and have come to become dependent on each other for our day to day existence. Cooperative societies were possible only when we learnt to live in peace and harmony with each other and defend ourselves together from the enemies. In a concordant society, there is no place for extreme emotions like lust, aggression which may cause threat to others. These basal emotions though a part of each  one's personality can be tamed and kept under control. Education trains the intellect of a person and teaches discipline of mind by engaging the higher faculties of reasoning and making him follow a set of procedures. In a way it is preparing an individual to become a part of the society where he is going to reside and contribute in a constructive way for the rest of his life.

3) Learning livelihood skills and serving the society (Economical needs) To learn a skill and  serve the society by doing some value addition

At present we live in a world where we cannot imagine even one task which we can accomplish on our own (To get a clearer idea  try to imagine a world by removing any one particular community which we hardly recognize, e.g. , sweepers, truck drivers etc. ). We are completely dependent on each other for our basic and luxurious needs. In such a entangled and competitive society we all have to learn a skill and an ability to continuously improve that skill in order to do it better not just for our own direct benefit but the indirect benefit of others we serve. This not only leads to personal emotional and monetary benefits but also plays a part in the development of a more egalitarian society.

The last two ideas mostly evolved at the dawn of industrial age and we are sticking to it even though we are in the mid of information age. The critics say that we are taught like batches are produced in a factory with no regard for individual needs and differences. I totally agree to it but thinking of a solution to this problem will make you realise that the process has evolved over time (with or without interventions can be debated) and that it is more or less optimal in nature and a radical new approach might not just be difficult but also totally impossible in a short span of time.

This answer is based on my limited readings, observations and understanding. Please feel free to comment and share your opinion.

Governance in Nigeria

Governance in Nigeria is the totality of how the affairs of the Nigerian nation-state and the citizens of Nigeria are led and managed.

To this end, two sets of strategic functionaries are required:
  • Strategic leaders who set Nigeria’s strategic direction via aspirations (what Nigeria will be over a long term horizon) corporate visions (what Nigeria should be at specific times within the long-term horizon) strategic missions (what Nigeria must do to realize those visions and aspirations) strategic imperatives (how Nigeria and Nigerians must behave and conduct themselves) and strategic goals that will indicate whether the nation is on the right track to realizing its aspirations, visions and missions.
  • Strategic managers who decode strategic missions, translate those missions into relevant programmes and projects, enact compelling policies, implant and execute strategies designed to realize expectations with respect national interest, public interest and people’s interest in Nigeria specifically and in Africa in general
Governance in Nigeria needs to be proper meaning that it must be good and strong. Good and strong governance are two sides of the same coin of proper governance. Pursuit of good governance is necessary but not sufficient for proper governance in Nigeria. Same goes for strong governance. Good governance in Nigeria pertains to how the expectations of the Nigerian nation is satisfied. It also pertains to how the expectation of Nigerian citizens and other people in Nigeria are satisfied with respect to their wellbeing which in this Academy we define simply as welfare plus security Strong governance pertains to how systems, processes and procedures are institutionalized and respected in Nigeria.
Proper governance is not the responsibility of government alone. While the public sector makes its contribution, the private sector consisting of business enterprise society, political society and civil society also make some substantial contribution. We, in this Academy, refer to these contributors as synergic supporters in governance. Pictorially we present their contributions as follows.

For this reason the Academy will conduct short and long duration courses to train persons to drive, in organizations,
  • Public governance
  • Business enterprises governance which also embodies corporate governance
  • Political governance
  • Civil society governance
As a precursor to participating in these courses, students of the Academy are expected to acquire substantial knowledge of leadership and strategy as well as strategic management.
Programmes for these courses will be introduced in 2015 in Ibusa-Delta State – campus and Lagos study centre. In 2016 the courses will be extend to Abuja and a location in each geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Additionally the programmes will be introduced in Ghana and any African country subject to exigencies of conveniences.
Scope of Governance in Nigeria.
Scope of governance in Nigeria will be limited to five critical driving forces. Firstly Nigeria as the fulcrum of the black race on earth has no choice than to embrace proper governance. Proper governance on its part is not quick-fix compliant. Therefore governance in Nigeria must be strategic based on long term horizon.
In this Academy students will be made to strategize governance with respect to
  • 2020 era
  • 2050 era
  • 2075 era
  • 2100 era
Secondly the inevitability of high population in Nigeria poses a mutually exclusive choice of “trouble for Nigeria” or “opportunity for Nigeria”. In this Academy students will be exposed the two challenges but will be skewed to seeing Nigeria’s menumentous population as opportunities to be explored and exploited for the realization of the nation’s long range aspirations of
  • Good people great nation
  • Leader nation.
To this end, the following population projection base on a growth rate of 0.032 will guide governance strategy formation, development, crafting, implantation and execution
YearPopulation
2006 –141,599,363
2014 –182,636,227
2020 –221,045,229
2036 –367,732,826
2050 –574,053,337
2058 –740,419,541
2075 –1,271,583,339

1,490,813,598
2,816,679,363
If you are visiting this site and wish to solidarize with the strategic intent of the Academy kindly indicate what issues you consider must be addressed by governance in Nigeria now and in a foreseeable future.

Strategy as a phenomenon has many perspectives. Basically strategy pertains to how to effectively and efficiently address an issue be it aspiration, vision, mission, goals , objectives, targets, troubles, threats, problems etc. On this score, strategy can be studied and taught with respect to concepts embedded in it or with respect to the processes by which it is formed, developed, formulated and crafted. Alternatively strategy can be studied and taught with respect to its nature and practice or with respect to its application in human endeavors. Further more strategy can be studied and taught with respect to the tools and techniques with which it is conducted.
